Notes: from Sir Ken Robinson TED talk

Cultural myths: Americans do not get irony.

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND = IRONY

In some parts of this country there is 60 % drop out.

Points:

• Disengaged students

• Humans are diverse in nature

My note: My tree children are completely different and so are my children.

NCLB is focus on a model of conformity rather than diversity.

10% of kids are being diagnostic with ADHD

Children suffer from childhood

Children benefit most from learning .......

Creativity is essential for learning

Great teacher are about learning

The whole point of education is about learning.

Difference between engaging in task versus fulfilling a task.
If students are not learning, then you are engage in your job of teaching but you are not fulfilling it.

Testing should not be the end of education but a tool of supporting learning.

• Human life is inheritable creative

In Finland there is not standardized testing. Finland does not have a drop out rate.

The culture of the school is essential.

The culture of a school is very influential on learning.

With organic systems if the conditions are right there is growth.
Education is an organic system.

Quote from Benjamin Franklin:
"There three sorts of people in this world: there are people who are movable, people who are not movable, and people who are willing to move."

  2. The part about testing not being the goal but rather a tool? I think we've forgotten this. Tests should be used to tell us what students did or didn't get, and show us a way forward to make sure they get more in the future. Coming from NYC for over a decade, where tests have become as holy as Mount Olympus, it's nice to see that here in this district we can use tests as signposts lighting the way and not as the oasis we're aiming for.
